My very favorite home decor style is Cottage Style. It is very versatile and actually includes a number of different styles such as Country Cottage, French Country, Coastal or Beach, Shabby Chic and Romantic. There are certain characteristics common to all these styles and some that are peculiar to each.
The main thing to remember, as with all Cottage Style decorating, is that there are no rules. You are free to mix and match, even using elements from different styles. As long as you like it and it adds to the cozy, relaxed feel, that’s all that matters.
So what should you look for when decorating in each of the different Cottage styles?
This style is relaxed and casual. Think cozy farmhouse with warm woods, rustic furniture and antiques. Use colors of red, green, blue and yellow with floral, striped and checked fabrics. Accessories include quilts, stoneware pottery, twig baskets, embroidered linens and books.
The French country style has a warm and casual feel reflected in the rustic pine and painted furniture that is often used. Colors are reminiscent of the French countryside and include vibrant colors of yellow, gold, red, blue, rust and green. Natural materials are used in stone fireplaces, stone or brick floors and wood beams. Accessories include roosters, pottery, copper pots, wrought iron, wire baskets and colorful tablecloths.
Coastal or Beach:
This look is simple and casual with lots of white and blue or try a palette of red, navy blue, white and yellow. Bare floors are common, as are shutters, bead board, white paneled walls and slipcovers of canvas or striped cotton. White washed, distressed and painted furniture are right at home with the coastal look and seaside accessories like shells, boats, lighthouses and nautical themed accents are always good.
The words elegance mixed with casual come to mind. Colors used include white and ivory with soft shades of pink, blue and green. Furniture is white-washed, painted with light colors or light to medium wood finishes. Accessories include crystal chandeliers, flea market and garage sale treasures, flowers, candles and lace.
This style is feminine and floral with soft pinks and whites and soft light from candles, sconces and chandeliers. Furniture is often antique and fabrics are of floral prints, patterned linens and lace curtains. Right at home is feminine accessories of china, tea cups, milk glass collectibles, antique bottles, silver pieces, crystal and lace.
No matter which style you choose, you can create a home that is a quiet haven from the stress of your everyday life. A home where you can relax and just be yourself.
